I know vaguely the ones I'm thinking of, they were in a hospital, a school and a theater (I think), but was wondering if anyone could fill me in with more details?

June 14, 1995, a hospital in Budënnovsk, Stavropolsky area, was captured and the people were held hostages for six days. 130 people were killed, 1000 wounded.
October 24, 2002, a theater in Moscow was attacked with 700 people inside. The number of terrorists was about 20-50, they were girls and women, widows and sisters of killed Chechens. The hostages were kept for several days inside, when the Russian special forces started the operation for setting them free. A sleeping gas was used, which caused death of 129 hostages and most of the terrorists.
The worst attack happened on September 1, 2004, when a school in Beslan, North Osetia, was attacked with mostly children inside. The number of hostages was beyond 1000. It lasted for three days, the hostages were not given water or food and had to sit on the floor; besides, they were tortured. On Septermber 3 the special operation was started. The terrorists meanwhile were killing the hostages in the school, but some managed to run out. Anyway, more than 330 people died.

Don't know, but I would look up the Taliban because they are right on their border and the Russians have been fighting them for hundreds of years.
