For thousands of years, botany was the one thing that humans understood well enough.

Basically, botany's one "field of awareness" (science) that humans "had anything more than the vaguest of insights" (understood to a decent level).

It is saying that for for many thousands of years botany was the only subject that humans DID know a lot about.
For example in ancient times in the Americas, the Aztecs had very highly organized and efficiecnt farming methods because they knew a lot about plants, seeds, and crops...

It means people have been using plants to our advantage for a long time. At least thats what i got out of it. So i guess it all boils down to what you think.

It means that people knew more about plants and thier uses than anything else... it is true...People knew more about the medicinal uses and edibility of plants more than they understood the workings of thier own bodies, or anything else.
