I think that there is always some ego involved--whether its a big ego or a battered one, those attracted to public office are satisfying a personal need for power and fame and wealth. I think many start out with ideals as well or at least convince themselves that they are motivated by good intentions, new ideas and ideals, and some retain that throughout their career. However, I think in general as political careers progress, the ideas get stale and prove not to work, the ideals get forgotten and the motivation becomes more ego gratification, the exercise of power and the accumulation of wealth in varying proportions.

Its why term limits should apply to all political offices.

This one is rather simple, there is no fortune in it. public office around the world is always underpaid buy a mile, not to mention in most places there are restrictions on what you can and cannot do to make extra money

fame is certainly one and there are a few.

I know everyone hates politicians, but it is about public service and contribution to society

I know everyone can say a lot of bad things about bush, and i could come up with a few too, but he is doing what he thinks is best, and do not say otherwise, because you are either lying or stupid. I am also not saying what he is doing is right, just that he thinks it is.

Most public servants are doing it to make their country better, and if people would open their eyes, and forget about hating politicians for no real reason, perhaps they could see that.

For most people who run for office it is a pure public service effort.

For most of the rest it's for fame.

For a tiny fraction it's for fortune. After all, the pay may be lousy, but the graft is great.
