It is different for every individual. Some people need 3 hours of sleep every night to function at an optimum level, while other people might need as much as 10 hours a night to function mentally and physical at a perfect level. I know someone who claims that 2 hours of sleep out of 24 is his perfect amount. If he gets any more than 2 hours of sleep a night he feels lethargic.
It all comes down to a given individuals needs, when it comes to sleep. There is probably an average amount, and it is probably about 6 or 7 hours per night.

It depends on the person. It also depends on the age. Baby's sleep almost all day long, while elder people only a few hours. Churchill was famous for sleeping only 10 minutes in the afternoon during the war, and he lived a long life. For an average adult 8 hours is recomended, but too much sleep is just as dangerous as too litlte.

It depends on the individual. I have to get my full 8 or I will fall asleep standing up. My husband can get 4 and be fine. My kids are the same way, one daughter took after me, needs all she can get, the other took after him, can stay up until midnight, get up at 6am and not be sleepy for a nap in daycare. Sleep is all relevent. I say start with 8. If you need more awake time try 7, find a number where you feel refreshed and ready to go in the morning.

8 to 9 hours is the average number of hours of sleep to achieve a balance of health for a person at this day and age of information and technology.
it's not the number of hours your body does, it's the number of hours it needs for balanced health.

Most will say at least 6 hours but...6 1/2 to 9
and if you are still going through puberty
you need maybe even an extra hour on top of that
the youngins need more while they grow.

the amount of sleep someone needs varies from person to person. someone may be perfectly fine with only 5 hours of sleep whereas someone else may need twice that.
studies have found that highly creative people often need more sleep than most.
