When daylight refracts through rain droplets, the colors in the light are separated prismatically in the following order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. To see a rainbow, the sun must also be low in the sky, as in early morning or late afternoon. This is because the rainbow must always be opposite the sun as seen from where you are standing, not at right angles from it. (If the sun were straight overhead, any rainbow would have to be at your feet, which is impossible)

rainbows are caused by water droplets (humidity) in the air, combined with a very bright light source - usually the sun.
