Why are people mean? Here's the short answer: They're hurt. Here's the long answer: They're really hurt. At some point, somebody—their parents, their lovers, Lady Luck—did them dirty. They were crushed. And they're still afraid the pain will never stop, or that it will happen again.

There. I've just described every single person living on planet Earth.

The fact is that we've all been hurt, and we're all wounded, but not all of us are mean. Why not? Because some people realize that their history of suffering can be a hero's saga rather than a victim's whine, depending on how they "write" it. The moment we begin tolerating meanness, in ourselves or others, we are using our authorial power in the service of wrongdoing. We have both the capacity and the obligation to do better.

Because they feel out of control. Not everyone is mean, but everyone has the capability of being so. In some situations it's more of a protection mechanism, rather than just being a horrible person. Then again some people are just horrible and you have to get use to that in life

Some people do not know how to love themselves or they have fears cause they have been miss treated in someway by someone in their past, and others their lives are full of hate and bitterness. You know the old saying misery loves company, cause they are full of hate and bitterness they want others to fill the same way. If people can forgive themselves for what ever they have done wrong in life, it is the next step to understanding on how to love others. Hope this helps your understanding.

i don't know.
i am not mean
maybe someone who knows me, says i have been mean,
i hate "mean"
however, maybe what is mean to one person including you, would be thought of as "justice" OR LOVE. OR REVENGE,,
ACTUALLY, THE DEFINITION OF MEAN, I WONDER WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WOULD DEFINE MEAN TO BE?
WHY DO YOU ASK? BE SPECIFIC, SO I CAN UNDERSTAND TOO
mean= take out the e, and it spells man,,
maybe man is mean, and man is people.

You cannot say that all People are mean.

Because if one people likes something, the same another people would not like it.

So It does not take a consideration that the people do not like and they are mean.

If it is like that - The people who do not like,
then I would say that all the people are mean including "YOURSELF" & "MYSELF" also.
