The hobbit story is so vastly more complex than the Harry Potter series.
Have you read the rest of Tolkien's works surrounding his middle earth construct?
I won't try to articulate all of the particulars, but there are significant philosophical questions under examination in Tolkien's works, and Harry Potter is mainly a fun story.
Tolkien was a major academic figure along with C. S. Lewis and a whole crowd of others in his day.
J.K. Rowling is an imaginative woman who tells fun stories.
I am not a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, but I am familiar with both and as a well educated person I have to tell you that there is no comparison.
