Ah, the ugly stigma of European propaganda.
Well, lets face it: Eurpoe had the states and they lost the states...
all because the freedoms they denied the colonists.
Eurpoe free?
Funny I talk to Baha'is in Greece and they have had limits put on our religion there.
Free?
Some countries have laws against atheist.
Some say you can't talk against the government.
Free?
In Germany there are strict laws regarding what students may post in university newspapers.
Didn't France recently have a big-to-do about Arabics?
And how free do some of those Irishman feel?
Welfare sucks everywhere. Ask anyone on it.
Free?
Europe is far from free.
And the USA is far from perfect.
We do need a better health system.
But...
I can be what ever religion I wish.
I can post whatever I want in the school rag.
I can speak ill of the government with fear of little more than dirty glares.
Hell, dude, we have a movie star as Governor! Kermit the Frog is running for President!
Anyone can be an astronaut!
A bum!
A rockstar!
President! (and you don't have to raise an army and overthrow the government to do it!)
You can be anything, do anything in the USofA.
The United States of America was the first, still is, and will always be the leader of freedoms, always the Land of the Free.

PS... School shootings in Europe... well, I know of at least two in England, a country so much smaller than the usa. Irland has had not just school shootings, but school age terrorists! France has had several school shootings. I know of at least one in Germany. greece had one college level shooting, plus a religious class shot up.
Don't think bringing that up helped your point.

It's called rhetorical appeal: the Land of Yankee Doodle doesn't exactly have that zing to it; neither does the Land of Wal-Mart, and the Land of Oz is already taken.
More seriously though, a lot of Americans have a different perception of freedom and liberty than their European friends. Most Americans would cringe at the tax rates that support the generous welfare programs of European countries, for instance. Religious freedom is another biggie in America: the ban passed by France on burkas, etc., in public schools would probably never fly in the US, and would almost inevitably be considered unconstitutional.
Another issue tangential to this is the issue of sovereignty: Americans would *never* allow their country to be absorbed under a supernational framework like the EU.

well if you don't like it, why not start calling Greece the land of the free.
You have to look at the big picture. Of course europe is mostly democratic, but slightly more socialistic.
In greece for example if you are charged with a crime, you are guilty until you can prove yourself innocent.
In america you are presumed innocent until THEY prove you are guilty. it's a small thing but it's important as the burden is on the state to prove your guilty. It's not on YOU to prove your innocent.
This is important because it helps protect people from being held against their will and avoids excessive false accusations.
There are varying degrees of freedom throughout the western democratic world, including europe. But the basic rights and freedoms of the individual are still protected

Why??? I have absolutely no idea. hahaha..... You poor people are enslaved to so many things; from corrupt politicians to consumerist temptation. You all feel the need to earn enough cash to buy useless crap in order to keep up with the neighbours (who are doing the same thing). It is not enough though. The population is depressed and hooked on pills. You have no idea about the real world because you believe you are all living in paradise. It isn't - I assure you.
Voting doesn't seem to make any difference.... it's all rigged. Your soldiers fight in illegal war that was pointless from the beginning. You are enslaved to your cars and pay huge gas bills. You are so deeply in debt it's insane. Your government spies on you. Racism is still rife. You are surrounded by christian weirdos who take the bible literally - NUTS.
I could go on and on for hours. There are so many things wrong in the Land of the Deluded I can't think straight. But then you are used to crazy people. Marriages are doomed to fail. Nobody grows up in a stable home anymore. No-one is good enough so you just dump them. The world hates your guts.
Blah blah blah...... etc etc etc......... Phew, I'm too tired to go on.
Nothing personal you understand. But,
GET OUT IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!!

If you ever live in the United States of America you will understand the meaning of freedom. For those people in the USA that think we do not have freedom, well, what can I say... move to Greece. It's a great country and you can DO ANYTHING.

Shhhh!!! Shut up! We don't want all those damn yankees coming flooding over here and spoiling the place. Leave them holidaying in Iraq. It's bad enough we have to put up with MacDonalds without having to try to understand their badly written and spoken English. Darn heck, they can't even spell colour right.
I like Beefkake's reply. Just what are those detainees at Guatanamo Bay charged with or is that just something the people of the Land of the Free don't consider their problem?

Hmmm, let's just pick on France since they fall into this free Europe you speak of. I'm sure that those who rioted a few months back feel particularly free, un-repressed and have plenty of say about what changes are being made that affect their lives.
Your limited view of freedom is just as narrow as those you are criticizing in America.

Brcause it IS the land of freedom. From your examples it seems that you think that "freedom" means that your government hands you more free benefits. Here in America, we think that government should get out of your way and let the individual make the most of their talents and achieve the highest standard of living that they aspire to....without being taxed to death to support those unwilling to work, as in many European countries.

We as Americans call it the land of freedom because we have the right to vote on everything and to be able to express our opinions without fear of retribution from the government. But in saying that not all of us voted for George Bush Jr. We that didn't vote for him still have the right to voice our opinions of what a crappy job he is doing and come next election we will try to vote his party out of the Senate and Congress so that he will lose a lot of power to pass laws as he See's fit.
