That's the stadium used for the world cup finals of course.

The seating seems to go all around exept for one section behind one of the goals.

When the stadium was built for the olympic games in 1936, the gap was for the flame (you can still see the torch standing there)
Nowadays, the stadium is listed and so you can't change the outward appeareance, i.e. throwing the gap out.

I believe it was the Olympic stadium and the flame was in the gap. Stops the place burning down.

I should imagine it is to get airflow through the ground which helps maintain a good dry pitch all season round.
Man Utd & Chelsea struggle because no airflow gets in the stadium to dry out the pitch after it rains / snows, this means they have to re-lay the pitch often and it is harder to maintain an even playing surface in our winter periods.

I think it is the beauty of the architecture...stadiums do have their own grace...look at Fenway or Wrigley Field....they are classic stadiums..
