i.e shorter than time taken by light

I personally think the solar sails will be the first form of interstellar travel.

I think that the ultimate sub-light speed travel will be done by an engine similar to an ion drive, but much larger and powered by a fusion reactor, which could pickup hydrogen fuel as it travels through space.

According to Einsteins theory of relativity, from the travelers perspective, if you are traveling at near the speed of light, the distance between yourself and distant objects becomes much shorter and therefore take less time to bridge. From the travelers perspective, they could travel across our galaxy and back in a very short time frame if they were able to accelerate very quickly.

In order to accelerate at the rate needed. A large body of mass, probably a black hole, would need to be placed directly in the path of velocity. If the space craft could accelerate the black hole at a rate of h, then the passengers would simply need to be located at the correct distance from the black hole so that the difference between the acceleration of the passengers and the floor would be 9.8m/s^2. This way h could be an extremely high acceleration and it wouldn't damage the passengers.

Physics as we know it currently tells us that traveling faster than light is impossible, because as you approach the speed of light, your mass approaches infinity. An impossible scenario.

That being said, the above conclusion assumes you use conventional methods to travel through three dimensional space. Other theories, like the one postulated by physicist Burkhard Heim take a much more quantum approach to the solution. It's not faster than light, it's avoiding speed all together by bypassing space/time via interdenominational travel....i.e. warping, folding or sidestepping known dimensional space.

Now since Heim's theory has an uncanny knack for predicting the mass of particles to a high degree of accuracy, much higher than any other theory yet, many are taking the other parts of his theory a little more seriously. We shall see how this plays out over the next five to ten years as testing could actually begin quite soon.

Wormholes and cold fusion powered rocket boosters, it's the only way man. LIght speed travel is impossible- provingly ignorant to believe that any material known or otherwise could withstand the force of lightspeed. Wormholes & cold fusion powered rocket boosters- believe it man. We'll sip beers together and laugh about it when it becomes a reality.

Well, in the real world you cannot. Wormholes do not exist. And nothing has been found to exceed the speed of light.

But in the world of magic also known as science fiction anything is possible. I go for the infinite improbability drive, mainly because it is powered by a piece of fairy cake.

If you want FTL speed forget theory
Just use "warp speed" and forget any explanation of the fiction as there is no such thing as FTL. Pretending you could play around with a black hole without ending up inside it is silly.

If you want a "real SF interstellar voyage," use Solar Sails as Michael suggested.

At this time we have no such theory. All theories we do have limit the speed to less than that of light. This speed limit is not just due to our poor technology, the speed limit is theoretical.

in case you ought to construct a gadget that generates a great gravity field sufficiently vast to compress area itself then you ought to easily ought to position an section craft close to to the gadget even as that's switched off. once you turn it on area ought to grow to be compressed (ignoring the very shown truth that the deliver should be compressed also.. ought to desire a fashion to counteract the outcome of the gadget on the craft) then all reported craft ought to ought to do is vacation a extremely short distance variety the gadget the position upon the gadget should be switched off, area expands decrease back to standard & your craft alongside with it. therefore shifting the craft to a distinct aspect in area without surely vacationing any good distance. in case you forget concerning the great flaws its a notably solid theory.....

Time is non local. quantum events occur every where at the same time, macro scale quantum events have been created already, Sorry, you were looking for a sci fi solution weren't you and in that case I can not help.
