It's not just racial comments or slurs it is more about whether it crossed the line on what is acceptable trash talk.
OK a hypothetical>>>
Materazzi said Zidane was the son of a terrorist whore..called his sister a prostitute and him a terrorist and Zidane's mother was hospitalised just prior to the match..
Hypothetical remember
How would the Italians and the team have reacted had one of the French said something along the lines of I hope Pessotto dies, gutless bastard.
Of course there would be an uproar and rightly so, those players would need to be punished harshly also as it would be beyond acceptable to say something like that.
My point is what crosses the line and are we going keep accepting things like this creeping into the game until it is acceptable. So what ever Zidanes punishment is, if it is proven that Materazzi did say something to cross the line of acceptability, then he needs to be severely reprimanded also. If FIFA ignore it they will be the laughing stock of sporting bodies all over the world in lieu of their anti racism motto.

Man I wish people would stop thinking that we're defending Zidane's actions. I'm not. I'm simply stating that if Materazzi did say something racist towards Zidane then there should be a punishment for him as well. Zidane was punished and for some reason I don't believe the Italian player is an innocent victim in all this. I don't care about Zidane's previous incidents or what he did in the past to make people think he's a bad guy. I care about what really happened and what could have upset him so much that he would react in such a crazy way.
I doubt FIFA would take Italy's WC away. That's not fair to the other players. If Materazzi is guilty of racial slurs then him and him alone should be punished.

I agree with Hothaggies , Materazzi is a loud mouth , and always try to verbally abuse other players whenever he plays. There has been so much talk of Zidane should not have done this , it's the Final, billions of ppl watching.., role model for kids...... He should just walk away from the incident....... My to think that if he had just walked away from it all.... Would it matter after wards what had happenned on the pitch/? Will billions of people know what Mr Materazzi said to ZZ/? And what kind of man is Materazzi? None of us will know. So maybe what Zidane did was to show that something is happening in the pitch and I can't take it anymore .

Debatable whether FIFA highly regards racism issues important. But didn't those anti-racism banners make everyone feel nice and fuzzy.
FIFA will end up doing nothing.....except congratulating Italy.

I hope that Italy gets their title strip even though that's not likely to happen... I mean, the Italians made LOTS of racist comments against French players. Many French just got used to it and ignored it. But as for Zidane, he is a superstar and whatever Materazzi said Zidane, he deserved the headbutting. He should be honored that he was headbutted by the GREAT Zidane.

I watched the video several times. The referee wasn't close so there's no evidence of what Materrazzi told Zizou. It must have been something VERY insulting, otherwise Zinedine wouldn't go crazy...
But even if FIFA can't or won't do anything about that, it's really up to the fans to condemn such behaviors.
PS : Totally agree, SPAIN RULES!!!!

Fortunately for Meterazzi, his verbal abuse wasn't 'seen', nor 'recorded' so he can say anything he wishes.
Emma, for your information, Meterazzi is well known for his aggressivities and verbal insults in the pitch. He provoked Zidane and succeeded.
Nobody hits anyone without a reason.

even if they did assign a penalty for anything that was said, Zidane's actions afterward would more than negate any punishment that would be handed down. Zidane should have been the bigger man and kept his temper. His lack of self control cost France the game.

Italy's won, hardly likely they'll have to return the cup. Still, all form of racism should be dealth with immediately and harshly. Sports especially should have real sportsmanship qualities. Without that, it's just nothing.

On the assumption that some racist remark was made and assuming that it can be proven, FIFA may censure the player for the remark... could be a fine, could be a period of suspension.
Of Course, as it stands right now we do not know whether any racist remark was made. It's not right to jump to conclusions as yet.
