Well, I've been using flash memory for years now, ever since I first got Windows XP. And not once have I told Windows that I was going to remove either the USB flash drive, or any of the 4 memory cards that I own. And not once have I ever lost or corrupted any data, and more importantly to me, I've never damaged any flash drive, nor have I ever damaged a memory card.

So, in my opinion, nothing bad will happen. It does confuse Windows for a second or two, but, hey, what's new? Windows is always confused!

Removing a flash or jump drive without first stopping (disabling) it can cause the drive's data to become corrupt.

if by "flash memory" you mean a camera memory card, probably nothing. likewise a USB drive, though mid-transfer they can have some problems - especially data corruption/loss
