Personally if I was in his shoes I would have had a hard time not reacting the same way. Problem is, he has experianced an increase over the past couple years in anti-muslim racism and everyone knows it. This is his button, and everyone is pushing it. See below for more info...
Based upon various reports from professional lip readers who have studied the tapes of the head butt, it appears he said something about him being a "dirty butt-******* muslim", and various comments about his "mother and sister being a whore". Plus there was a debated comment about him being a "dirty muslim terrorist". The terrorist comment has been supported by a few lip readers but denied by a few others. Additionally, the italian denied the terrorist comment, by stating that "he didn't even know what that meant"...
Personally, if he said that crap to me and there were any racist remarks like that, I would have likely hit him too. I'd put up with the "your mama's a whore comment" but the religous comment and the terrorist thing, went too far.
Just a side note though, Zidane's mother had been hospitalized only hours before the game so this likely played a part in his reaction.
Now, I am German so I could care less who won, but there is more to this story than is being told... Zidane's actions were wrong but the itlalian guy should have kept his mouth shut too. If the muslim comment and/or the terrorist comment are true, then the Itlalian guy deserved exactly what he got. And if it was me, I would have likely kicked him in the nuts afterwards. However if these things weren't actually said, which I doubt, then Zidane is a disgrace.
That being said, there's no room anywhere for racist and ignorant comments like that and if they were made, actions should be taken against the italian player.
They will likely never speek about this publically, because if Zidane states that the italian offended the muslim faith, there will be mass rioting world wide against Italy. And no one wants that again...

The reaction of the French to Zidane obviously reflects a feeling that Zidane was abused. Something has to be done to clarify what was said, FIFA must take action and such a comment has to be punishable by football. FIFA has issued a recent directive to eradicate racism in the game they must address this or the credibility of the game as far as I am concerned is nill.

You people it's not the first time that Zidane does this thing(headbuting a player),it's not fair to find him excuses!!!
We don't know what Materazzi told to Zidane, these are just speculations.Materazzi talked to the media, denied that he called him a terrorist, but Zidane didn't talk to the press...So who's to blame?Zidane can't face the media because he can't explain what he did.!!!

He said something offensive and he deserved what he got but zidane didnt deserve to get kicked out of the game im sure anyone else would've done the same if someone said something extremely offensive like that, mozzarella should of been kicked out not zidane.

same here, kicky. although, if i were a football player of zidane's experience, i'd be probably be used to trash talk by now. but with the racist remarks, i don't know maybe i would react violently too 'cuz they do convey a different level of comtempt.i think under a different set of circumstances, zidane would have let that wash over him but it's been wild playing with the italians to put it mildly, and he and his team mates suffered a lot of physical abuse so in the end he simply lost it. he's just human.

Gees, there are so many things going around about was said to make Zidane lose it. I heard that Merazzi said something ugly about his mother. Anyway that's not the point of the questions so let me move on.....
If somebody said something to me about anybody that i love then i would of lost it! I don't have time for people who try to make other people's lives unhappy.

I don't know what the Italian said to Zidane. And Zizou said he'll possibly say one day but not yet....
It should have been something VERY insulting though...
In general I try not to loose it. And I don't mind if someone tries to isult me, as far as they stay away from my family...

Matarazzi had insulted Zaidan's family and Religion "ISLAM".
and because Zaidan is very nice...he didn't tell the media that Matarazzi insulted Islam, and he kept it for him self, because if he did announce that Matrazzi insult Islam, Muslims all over the world will walk out in the street with Italian flag burns and wanted to kill matarazzi, for insulting Islam and Muslims.. so it is more like political issue, and Zaidan saved Mattarazi's ***,,,,,,
That's why Fifa gave ziadan the Best Out standing Player in world cup 2006.....
thank u

WHAT WAS SAID SPECULATION..FIRST AND FOREMOST...
LIP READERS ARE FOR S.HIT...
SECOND OF ALL..IT IS JUST SIMPLE TRASH TALKING...I'VE PLAYED ENOUGH BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL(SOCCER), BASEBALL, AND AMERICAN FOOTBALL TO KNOW THAT GUYS WILL SAY ANYTHING TO GET AN EDGE...
I AM AN ATHLETE...THERE ARE NO WORDS THAT I HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE...I KNOW HOW TO BLOCK IT OUT..
I CHOOSE TO IGNORE THE BS AND PLAY THE GAME...
THE BEST SLAP IN THE FACE..IS THE FINAL SCORE...
BUT FOR WHAT HE DID TO MATERAZZI...THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED...DID
HE LOST THE WORLD CUP..APPARENTLY..HE KNEW THAT WOULD HAPPEN AND DIDN'T MIND...
HEADBUTTING THE GUY MEANT MORE THAN THE CUP ITSELF..
HE ALREADY HAD 3 YELLOW CARDS IN THE TOURNEY AND PROBABLY THOUGHT IT WOULD GO UNNOTICED AND IT ALMOST DID...BUT THE SLAP IN THE FACE IS AS IT OUGHT TO BE...
MATERAZZI HAS A CUP...AND ZIZOU DOESN'T...

for sure marco said something that made zaidan flip out, both they should be punished and zaidan was by raising the red on his face and loose his last game. i think the fifa should really take a serious stand against racism, and make very tough punishments on all players that they treat others based on their color, race religion etc....
