I used to run a whole lot. More than what you did there and frequently too. About a year ago i started having pain in left knee. I went to the doctors and had an MRI done. Turned out i had chondoron malatia patella, a degenerative muscular problem which required surgery.

The surgery (which happened about a month back) was really quick and painless though and it involved removing some of the screwed up muscles at the back of my left patella so that the fine and dandy ones could grow normally.

Now I'm much better. There's less pain when i walk but i still cant run for about 3 months and have to rake it easy for fear of a relapse. Sure i really miss running and the feeling of getting pumped up and all sweaty, but i guess it's better that i got this problem fixed before it got worse.

I suggest you get your knee checked out. Solve the problem while it's still in its infancy.

Friendly advice:
Get to a doctor! Now that it is the beginning!
I did not do that and I have developed serious problems!
Also, avoid operation! If the doctor advice you operation or other drastic measures, visit another one!
Swimming, to my experience is great! Running hurts and worsens the condition. What about your weight? Will it help to loose some, if you are a little overweight?
Also, the doctor will give you exercises to make some muscles stronger, so the pressure will not pass from your ligament and knee but undertaken by those muscles!

if it continues nonstop after excercise, go see a doctor, you might have tendinitis.
