I don't remember a whole lot of detail about the movie, but I remember really liking it back then. Basically, there was an old abandoned house set in the woods. It was a victorian style house. There was a family whose little girl looked exactly like the little girl in the portrait in the house, I think. That part I'm sketchy on. The little girl and another kid (or two??) go looking for something in the house, and the family solves the mystery of the older family when they find the little girl's bones, I believe.
I don't have any character names to go on, or movie names. I saw it when I was little, so it would have been made in the mid 80's or before then. It may have been a made for tv movie.

It was not the Ring, or anything like it. For more info.. I am fairly certain it was modern times for when the movie was made, not a period piece. I think there was a locket involved. I have other vague memories, but nothing that I can "latch" onto, and put into words. It's like faded dream memories- when you try to remember them, they slip away.

It almost sounds kind of like Cold Creek Manor..but that came out in 2003. I'm not sure if it's a remake or is based on a book or a screen play that a previous film might have been done with. If you remember any more details..throw them out there.
