I cannot see why this rule is not in force yet. Does anyone doubt for a second that a Muslim would not hesitate to lie once he has sworn to tell the truth on the Bible, or that a Christian would have any regret lying once they were forced to swear on the Koran? I would not respect someone who told the truth after being forced swear on a religious symbol of a different belief. Being a believer of either religion almost compels you to lie in such a case.

No. because the Koran is a false pagan religion about a false pagan god. Therefore it has no place in our courts whether the person believes them or not. we have atheists all the time convicted for things and they don't believe in God either

You seem to take a pretty dim view of Christian morality when you ask if anyone would think that a Christian would have any regret lying in a court of law. No wonder you are so cynical about the morality of other religions. It isn't particularly surprising, when your own moral sense dictates to you to disrespect people who tell the truth even in what for them would be difficult circumstances. In any case, where I live a person giving testimony in a court of law is entitled to take the oath on whatever is sacred to the religion he or she espouses, so the question of forcing them to swear in a way that violates their convictions doesn't arise.

I think you are overlooking the bigger picture. The act of swearing on the bible is symbolic. But legally, you are bound by your promise to tell the truth, regardless of how you promised it.

Think of the procedure as an acknowledgement that you are aware you're under oath. That's how the law sees it.

Really think about it for a second. You can make-up whatever religion you wanted to get around the swearing process. The judicial system, however, is blind to your religious beliefs. It just needs to hear you repeat your promise...

I cant believe the drivel that seems to be reaching these pages today. I have addressed three racist questions like this and I'm blown away by the narrow mindedness of some. Why on earth would it occur to you to ask a question like this? What is it about attending court that you are so angry about or afraid of? And if neither of these questions is close to the truth, why is it that you try to cloak your racism in psuedo-serious rhetoric? Try this for size. God visited the earth in a number of guises, realising in his all knowledge that we were limited in our ability to understand Him. So he came as Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha and others. Religion is Man's interpretation of all this and like then, we still dont understand as good as we think we do. We are all climbing the same mountain to Him. Just its a big mountain with different sides to it and in our infinite stupidity we cant see the others who are also climbing. This is not a theological argument, just a different point of view to counter the stupidity of your last statement and other's racism. Belonging to one religion does not compel you to lie for any reason. Mind you its great justification for a racist standpoint and stirring the religion pot.

This swearing on the bible is old hat and should have been abolished years ago. Just a simply explanation in court that if you lie this is a criminal of fence known as perjury and you will be charged and imprisoned if you do. I think all people would get that picture.

If someone does not believe in the Bible, they are not compelled to swear on it. They are asked instead to "affirm", not swear to God. Sometimes, they DO have alternative religious books available for people of different faiths to swear on.

No Way.The Koran is at best an apostolic text, who's source material draws draws from Muhammad, who was illiterate,in that he could not write. In that oral traditions are imposable to confirm.
