Liens need to be recorded at the county. However, county records are notoriously bad, incomplete, sometimes just wrong or delayed. (at least where I live) If you talk to someone at a title company, they will take the time to help you verify that all of the property information on file for you is correct. They can help you correct things that are in error. Sometimes the tax id number does not go to the right address etc. They can verify all that with you and also verify any liens on your property. Sometimes a vendor will place a mechanics lien on your property and there are rules about when and how they can do this. Usually within the 1st year after work is done can they do this and only for certain types of work. A title agent can explain different kinds of liens and help you make sense of it. They can also help you correct liens that are erroneously posted. Or if it is beyond the capabilities of their office, they can refer you to someone who can help. Generally they will help you with this for free especially if you are a customer of theirs. Go talk to the title company that recorded your sale and they should be able help you. Hope that helps.
Good luck!

For a lien to be effective against third parties it must be recorded. That is either your county recorder of mortgages or conveyance office or clerk of court depending on where you live. Most county clerks offices have websites with instructions and guidelines posted. They are generally indexed by owners name but just in case have a legal description on hand to do the research. If you want help from the clerks, it is best not to go on Monday, wednesday and Fridays since those tend to be there busiest days for obvious reasons. And don't go at lunch since the clerks are at lunch or everyone and his grandmother goes at lunch!
