I have 7 times, and have found it very interesting. Between the people watching, the unraveling of truths and lies so that one can sort out what the true story really is, and the heightened awareness of some situations and what should and should not be done concerning them, I have never had a bad jury duty. it is like all other things, what you make of it. perception is everything. it is a privilege to be able to serve on a jury, but some people don't want to be bothered as they feel they are too busy or don't want the hassle. if you do get chosen, look at it as an opportunity to see how the courts really function instead of as a day or week that will be wasted. it goes much better if you look at the situation with the thought of helping someone who is innocent or helping take a guilty one off the streets for a bit. best wishes!

I served on a chiropractic malpractice jury. It lasted 6 days, but was not a sequestered jury, so I got to go home and even to work at night.
Actually, if you are lucky, you just show up for the summons, and can go home by lunch. Even if you are called as part of a pool for a trial, there is a statistical improbability of you being asked to sit on the jury. Since an average "jury" is 14 or 16 (the famous 12 plus two or four alternates, with only 12 of those entering deliberation), out of the total called up from the group at the courthouse, many are eliminated for a variety of reasons.
Not that I am advocating unusual behavior or lying to get out of a jury, but if you are not suitable on a jury, they will not take you.
For the trial for which I served, it was very boring, with a lot of technical details. In the end, the only thing I took away from it was never to go to a chiropractor.

No it isn’t so bad, it is interesting to see and hear how different, different people have interpret the situation they have been into, but one has to be awake all time long and listen carefully and make check ups in the written information and take it in for consideration too.

It was a total pain in the you know what.
The jury selection took hours, and they ask many personal questions so you feel like you're on trial - in front of the parties that are going to trial.
I was surprised when they ask your name, address, etc., and one of the trials involved violence. I kept thinking "sure makes it easy for this guy to stalk someone if he loses this trail".

No, we do not have a jury in our legal system in South Africa. I always find it fascinating though!
