Artists are but only a product for public consumption, marketed by their record labels.

It is not like many years ago when the music was the thing that mattered. Perhaps that is a reason why so little music is released today that is any good or will be remembered.

Do look at the positive side of that-- if the musician can make money with other merchandise, they can take their time and make their music as good as they possibly can. If they make money solely off their music, they'd be forced to churn stuff out whether it's ready or not, whether it's good or not, just to have something to sell.

If someone said to you.."wanna make a million bucks to wear our sneakers?" I'm sure you'd say.."naw..I'm fine". I don't think it has to do with greed, ego or anything other than.."all I gotta do is wear your watch in my next music video and you give me 250 grand?"...who in their right mind would refuse? Your voice may crap the bed tomorrow but the royalties rom Coca-Cola will be rolling in forever. Simple, good business decisions.
