Get comfortable shoes.
Greet people. Be friendly but not invasive. Bring drink orders right away. After the food is served, wait a minute or two, then return to see that everything is OK. (Hint here: Ask a question that gets a yes or no answer i.e., "is everything OK here?" That way they can just nod if they have food in their mouths.)
Keep scanning your tables to see if anyone's trying to get your attention.
Clear empty dishes as soon as you can. As soon as it's apparent that people are finished, check to see if they want something else; if not, give them their check right away.

I am also a waitress. It is important to get comfortable shoes, but also you should get slip resistant shoes that you can buy at Walmart or Payless. Many restaurants require them anyways.
Sometimes it's better to ask someone a question about their order rather than just bringing out the wrong thing.
Sometimes you have to ask for help. Other servers are usually understanding and your manager may also be very helpful.
This may be common sense to most, but there are some servers that have trouble with it. Be careful not to touch people's food more than you have to. At my work we don't touch the food at all, we use tongs and utensils to get anything we need such as lettuce. Grab the cups low so you are touching where customers may sip on them.
And also be nice to the cook! If you screw up and need something new they will get it faster if they like you.
Good luck!

always smile even though some of your customers may seem like pricks. Never judge a person when they walk through the door. Think Tips..Big Tips! I've never been a server but I would just imagine me as the customer and what I would want out of a server. I'm a middle class person but I'll give chunky tips for great service.

Make sure you have the correct order, if they say bacon and eggs, give them bacon and eggs. Make sure that their water glass or coffee cup is not empty. Don't wait for them to call you, by checking on them whenever you past them. Don't hang around your friends when they come in or your co-workers. Keep your eyes on your tables so you can meet their needs. Smile, say "Thank you,Sir" or "I'm sorry we're running late on your order" and I will give you up to 20% Can I also tell you, I hope you are not chewing gum while you're saying that irritating word "YEA"
