When my daughter was constipated and very uncomfortable[she cried alot at this time.] It may sound gross but it is a quick relief for her ....put on some rubber gloves, place a diaper under her bottom ,place some Vaseline on your finger and gently place your finger in her bottom .....it does not sound pleasant but she will immediately release her poopy problem and fall fast asleep. This is not recommended for every single constipation occasion. Only when she is very young and you can't give her prunes or any laxatives or stool softeners. It wasn't nice but after my baby pooped she was happy and so I was happy that she finally felt better. Shoot if Bobby did for Whitney and she is a grown woman we can do the same for our little ones comfort !

Try the natural remedies before you do something evasive like an enema. Forego solid foods for ONLY 1 day and absolutely no more so your won't deprive her of nutrition, but you shouldn't wait too long so you won't cause her stool to worsen. And don't give her milk or formula for a DAY but no longer, you don't want to dehydrate her. Poop needs water to make her bowels move.

Be sensitive to her pain, she will cry more, be more agitated, her tummy will be hard and she will react to your cuddle in a painful way. Offer her prune juice first, then apple juice.

Depending on her age, (7 to 10 months) filter these juices with water. Wait ONLY 30 minutes to an hour before giving her more juice. The sugar in the juice will give her energy to get through this.

If after 24 hours she has not pooped then you can use a glycerine suppository for infants. The label says for 2 years and older? Just break the "tip" off the suppository and insert it in her retum. DO NOT use the entire suppository on her.

Within a few minutes she should poop.

Take her diaper off and look at her rectum. If you see hardened poop you may have to assist her by gentely using your finger. Be very careful in doing this. You don't want to damage the anus.

If after the 24 hour period she is still having a hard time then use a "baby" suringe with soapy water to give her an eninma. It is not painful if you are gental. ONLY use 1/2 inch of the seringe.

She should feel immediate relief.................

Good luck and be gentle.

I give my daughter two ounces of Gerber Apple-Prune juice, and mix that with two ounces of water. I have never given it to her straight, because juices have so many grams of sugar in them. Gerber has about 13g of sugar per 4 ounces. I would also recommend giving it to her in the morning, when sugar will have time to flush through her system, and hopefully not keep her awake at night.

If all else fails, call your doctor. My daughter is 6 months old, and this remedy seems to work. Best of luck, I know how cranky babies can be when they're constipated.

Also, the person who answered before me has a good point, though I have never heard of using a finger. My doctor told me that if the baby gets desperate enough, I could use some vaseline on a rectal thermometer. It doesn't sound pleasant, and I have NOT tried this method. But if it came down to it and my baby was absolutely miserable, I would.

It all depends on the age of your child and if you are/aren't breast feeding. If you are breast feeding, you need to take in stuff that normally loosens up the stool, like oranges, prunes, etc. Unlike previous posts, I wouldn't give your child apple juice. Apples are part of the BRATs diet to give your child if they vomit or have diahrrea... Bananas, Rice, Apples and Toast all firm everything up, not help loosen it up. If your child is under 1 year old, directly giving orange juice is a toss in the air. Our pediatrician said to avoid orange juice for kids under 2 years of age.

My suggestion is, plenty of fluids, water or water mixed with berry juice. Milk can cause both diahrrea and constipation depending on the child. If your child is a bit lactose intolerant, try giving a little bit of yogurt or milk. But again, that depends on your childs age.

If your child is still under 3-4 months of age, our pediatrician said that babies can poop ten times a day OR poop once every ten days. Though I would be a bit upset if my child only pooped once every ten days, she did say it is normal.

If at all in question, consult your pediatrician, and especially before giving any medicine.
Good luck and I hope all "comes through" soon.

All of the answers are good. But, if your doctor has not started your baby on any juices yet, then don't. Add a teaspoon of kayro syrup to the water, and try to see that the baby gets about 6ozs of water with the syrup daily, assuming the baby is about 2-3 months old.

Prune juice. And be prepared for the resulting exposion! It is totally normal for babies to not pass anything, even for up to 10 days when they are going through a growth spurt. My parents still love to tell the story of me as a baby and I held on for 9 days and then soiled myself right up to my shoulder blades!

Take a q-tip with a little bit of vasoline and rub it around her anus. My son experienced this alot and it usually worked. If it dosent you can always put some warm water into an ear syringe and squirt it up her hole, but not alot or it will hurt her.

Give her baby fruit juice Like Gerber's apple. It needs to be made for babies. In about 2 hours she should be fine, or you can use glycerin suppositories.

Putting the age of you baby when you ask a question like this helps but increasing fluid intake (water) can help.

Prunes work every time. Now that's only if she's eating solids. Otherwise, check with your doctor. But seriously, prunes work. Be ready to change some nasty diapers.
