It all depends on what you use your PC for.
For example, a movie-editing enthusiast might need at least 160GB. A person who just wants to surf the net and do some occasional downloading might be OK with 40GB.
It's so cheap nowadays when you're paying less than 50¢ a GB. It hard not to go with something over a 100GB. Just beware that some older PC's (before 2001) will likely have trouble seeing drives that are larger than 137GB (known as the 28-bit LBA barrier). You can read more about it here:

Robert,
ROM is not the correct term to describe a hard drive. ROM, of course, stands for Read-only Memory which has to be "flashed" to be changed. The BIOS settings, for example, are stored on a ROM chip on the motherboard. In order to keep its data stored, ROM has to always have a power source. This is why there's a battery on your mobo.
Hard drives, on the other hand, are magnetic read and write storage mediums that don't require constant power.

Depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you are a person that downloads everything, or plays games a lot, I'd reccommend having 100+ GB....if you're just using it for school or work, anything around 50GB is nice.....
If you're like my bro (I hope you're not), you'd want over 1000GB (also known as a terabyte).
Space isn't really the big issue with computers these days, it's more about the speed and graphics anymore.

Are you asking about RAM or ROM . RAM for a Windows XP would use all of 2GB. or more It appears that Vista will need more. ROM that depends upon what you want to use the system for ,I would say 100 - 250 would be on the minimum side yet still workable.
