Sethle is closest, however if you have a big block chevy, it is different. For a small block, looking at the head installed on the engine, the valves are (in order from left to right, regardless of which side of the engine you are looking at) exhaust, intake, int, exh, exh, int, int, exh. On a big block it alternates exh, int, exh, int, exh, int, exh, int. Four cylinders vary, as do straight six, and V6 models. EASIEST way to tell, with the valve cover off, look where the intake runners on the intake manifold attach to the head, the runner will align with the intake valve. Same applies to the exhaust manifold, the exhaust ports line up with the exhaust valve.

This is fairly easy to answer. The exhaust valves are the larger of the 2 valves. But the best and easiest way is to follow thw valve over the exhaust. If the valveis in direct alignment with the exhaust, then this is the exhaust valve. If the valve is in direct aslignment with the intake runners then this is your intake valve. I hope you understood what i was trying to explain, but just look at where the valves are in the head. Larger opening is exhaust and the smaller port opening is the intake.
Good Luck

If you are looking at the head from the top, and still have it attached to the engine, you can tell which is which by the way the intake and exhaust passages go to the head. If you count from the front, the 2nd and 3rd, as well as the 6th and 7th are all intake. The 1st, 4th, 5th, and 8th are all exhaust.

Common size for intake valves are 2.02, exhaust is 1.60.
Obviously you could check them exactly with a caliper, or just look at them. The bigger ones are the intake valves, period.
