The tradition does tend to vary by what part of the world in which one asks the question. Generally, in Britain, the black cat is thought of as a lucky animal, while the white cat was an unlucky one. The reverse is the tradition in the USA, Belgium, Spain, and other portions of Europe.

It is—in the first tradition—good luck if a black cat walks into a house or boards a ship, especially if it an univited visit. (An odd aspect of this tradition, pronouncing the word "cat" is thought unlucky while shipboard, but actually having the animal onboard is okay.) In this case, the cat is not to be chased away, or it will take the luck of the house or ship with it as it departs.

An old saying (which I cannot find an attribution for) maintained that "whenever the cat of the house is black, the lasses of lovers will have no lack."

To meet such an animal is thought fortunate, especially is it runs across the observer's path (the exact reverse of this is the US tradition). In some areas, it is thought that the encounter will only be a lucky one if the animal is petted three times, or at least greeted in some positive fashion.

Some traditions hold that the encounter with a black cat is unlucky if the animal crosses from the left to the right, or if the cat turns back upon its own tracks, or if it runs away from the person meeting it.

To meet a white cat under any circumstances (again, this is reversed in the US) is bad luck.

In East Yorkshire it is commonly held that owning a black cat is lucky, but meeting one is otherwise unlucky. Black cats became valuable animals in this area of the country, as the idea that if the wife of a sailor kept a black cat in her house, her husband would also return from the sea.

For the most part, wether a black cat is a lucky or unlucky animal depends a gret deal upon where one lives, and upon what a particular color is associated with.

Putting cats as a bad luck cause of there colour is black is not a good judgment. Even girl or boys have their eyes colour black. Black is the colour of night ( we do not say night is a bad luck). It is just a mis conception of some less educated peoples that some or anything in the universe is bad or good luck cause of its colour. Cats may be good luck if you treat them good or bad luck if you treat them bad. Over all there is no colour matter!

One king of England,Charles 1, owned a black cat, his fear of losing it was so great that he had it guarded. The day after it fell sick and died ,the gaurd was arrested.Black cats were often witches in disguise or witches familiars. There were also many cat charms relating to ships and the sea.Fishermans wives would keep a black cat at home to prevent disaster at sea, consequently the cats became very valuable and were often stolen. If a cat ran ahead of the saloir to the pier that would bring him good luck, but if the cat crossed his path it means bad luck, cats were often kept on board the ships,if a saloir was approached by the cat it meant bad luck. The worst possible cat-related act, guarenteed to raise a storm and bring bad luck af all sorts, was to throw a cat overboard

There's no such thing as luck and anyway, if there is, Cats, black or white, can't dictate our luck. We ourselves determine our own future. We make our own decisions, so the color of a cat, and any cat for that matter, is irrelevant in our success or failure.

Neither, black cats are just cats that are black. They really have no special influence on luck either way.
