do you report it to the authority or do you keep the money?

Ten years ago I would have reported it; now that money would be hidden so fast it wouldn't dry. Once I thought the "system" was fair and if you were a good person you could win in the end.
Buzzzzzzzzzzz - time is up and you are out!
Now, my kids would have a great time at the amusement park and college would be paid for in full. We would all have decent used cars and the rent would be paid for the next ten years. One million cash in a lake is probably not legal money so I am simply taking it away from criminals. Besides that who looks at serial numbers on money any more? All that and a bottle of good single malt!

You could always report to the Authority's that you lost 1 million dollars in a lake, and leave the bag where you found it.

sorry but i would keep the money, if it was in a bag by the lake then i am sure that i am not stealing from a little old lady that could not have possibly lifted that heavy bag. Who ever it was probably drowned in the lake (drug dealers). i would help my family and close friends, i would invest it to make more money and if someone did come on tv claiming they lost a million dollars i would give it back to them but if i played my cards right by then i should have already been a freakin billionare.

I'd turn it in because that amount of money gets noticed, and the serial numbers are recorded. I wish I'd turn it in for humanitarian reasons, but someone who's lost that much money has more where it came from. I wouldn't want ot be caught trying to spend it.

Keep half of it and hand the other half into the police.
If it's claimed you'll probably get a reward and you'll still have half a million... if it's not claimed you get the other half.
And you have a semi-clear conscience
