Children with a specific learning disabiity will be in the low average to above average IQ range , but demonstrate an achievement level below what they are capable of. Children with cognitive delays such as mental retardation will have an IQ of less than 70 and may also have delays in one or more of the following areas such as : self help/daily living skills, speech and or language, fine and gross motor skills, sensory integration, physical , or visual impairments.
Children with Autism may be mentally handicapped or may be very intelligent, but most have delays in the acquisition of language, poor ability to perceive people's feelings and poor social skills, sensory integration disorders, delays in other areas, and the list goes on. Each disability has it's own characteristics, some of those overlap with characteristics of other disabilities.
