I think it usually comes from the company that the deceased spouse worked for.

I can think of a few:

Depends on what entity gives the check:

Insurance company: Then it's called a Beneficiary award (or)Beneficiary endowment

In some instances through a pay check or retirement package like police/firefighter/military and some other occupations): it would be called: Survivor benefit's check

From a Will or Trust it is called: an inheritance check

Probate - court decision would be an: Affidavite check

it really depends on who the check is from and why I suppose.

I think you can get social security. For sure if you have children.
