Really the ones I have seen are always mixed. It could be due to the fact that most people are right handed. And crossing out a male/female box I would say that putting a line through the right hand side would seem more neater to me (I'm right hand). Bearing this in mind it seems that men are more likly to work the whole of there lives and at the moment there are a lot more men at work or at looking for work. But at the end of the day its up to the employer if they want to put male in front of female, I'm sure if it was the other way around there still be some female moaning about it.

I think a more appropriate question would be, "Why are people so concerned with trivialities such as 'why the MALE is in front of FEMALE in application forms.?' when the world has far more pressing and complexed issues that require resolution?"
Or perhaps this one: "Which is more important: to worry about why one gender's description appears before another on an application form or to be comfortable with one's own gender and the role he/she (or she/he) plays in their community and society at large?"
Perhaps if you can answer either of those two questions you'll discover that finding a way to create harmony is more productive than sitting in front of an application form wondering whether you should complain to the overseer about the form's layout.

I guess it's because we are all creatures of habit.
Everyone asks--Boy or Girl
Mr., Mrs., or Ms.--His & Hers--He or She
Lad & Lassie
Some things become common, and then it sounds odd to say it any other way. That doesn't make it right, just easy.

because behind every successful man there is a woman (to tell him he is wrong!)
now even this saying is changed!
beside every successful man is a woman!
see the form carefully. they are beside and not in front or behind!
which means they are equal whether society accepts it or not.
