If you want to help socity progress you have to either invited something or come up with a philioscally idea that will make humankind stop and think about that it is doing in the world and how it can help each other.

That best contribution to the society can be if you can help the society to get elevated spiritually. It is because Spiritual activities are eternal and nourish the spirit soul (that we all actually are). Spiritual activities bring the Body, Mind and Soul in harmony and if everyone in society gets even a slight understanding of this fact this will be a better world to live in - Because everyone will care for each other. Imagine a world where your only job is to take care of others because you are already being taken care by many others.

It would take a lot. First you'd have to teach logic to the illogical, intelligence to the ignorant, eliminate money, make everyone equal in society, make everyone love everyone and everything, make everyone exist soley for each other, and much more.
Even God can't do that (if he really exists).
All any of us can really do is to contribute as much as we can afford, whether monetary, empathy, love, etc. and hope someone actually appreciates it and makes changes themsleves, as a result.

Thats why you look out for number 1, and your friends n fam. cause they'll always be there before "society" will.
