It is a marketing strategy, radio stations attempt to position themselves in a manner that will appeal to the greatest amount of people to tune in.

Radios make money via advertisements (one of many routes), so the more people who listen to a particular station, the more likely they are to have greater bargaining power to milk advertisers.

So when people perceive a radio station to be better by virtue of their musical selection, and listen to it, the more these radios get to charge.

Basically, it means to say that they want you to believe that they understand your musical preference and choices better than any other station and play a mix of music that appeal to a greater demographic while still entertaining their core listeners (which can be the teeny booper in the convertible or the executive on the way to work), entertaining, but still appealing to a broad spectrum of listeners.

actually most of the commercial stations are owned by one company, i drive around the UK all day long and whatever station i tune into there are the same DJ's playing the same songs, when you hear them mention the radio station that's just a pre-recorded voice over...its a con not to mention boring for people like me travelling all the time.

You should hear the shite that's piped into my local garage. Gotta be the saddest breakfast DJ in the world. Trying to encourage me to buy a Kit-Kat between songs. It's the poor bastards that work there that I feel sorry for.
