You can vote for more than 5 authors if you want, but try to put the ones you like the very best at the top of each list. I'll tally up the results, if there is enough participation, and show who got the most votes. If you feel like it, nominate an author whose books didn't live up to your expectations, whose work was so bad that it makes him a candidate for the Tripe Award.

I honestly don't read enough of either to have a top 5: I'll try and squeeze out a top 3 in each:

Fantasy: 1. J.R.R. Tolkien 2. R.A. Salvatore 3. I honestly can't think of another really good one, actually, even Salvatore ain't that great. Lol, sorry.

Sci-Fi: 1. Orson Scott Card 2. Isaac Asimov 3. Matthew Stover's pretty good (even if he does rely on some rather basic writing techniques to get his points across).

George R R Martin is by far the greatest fantasy writer. There are some other noteable writers such as Jordan, and Goodkind. But I strongly suggest Martin. He mixes everything perfectly wihtout the bore of Jordan, or the mimicking of Goodkind.
