What you intend on doing depends on your goals. Do you want to program, design or develop? Programming is self explanatory. Designing involves more artistic and elements of media such as streaming or flash. Development uses programming and a little design but also uses more structure. Development is what I got into because it's middle ground. A developer is usually well rounded in a little of everything but you expert at bottom line HTML development.
I suggest taking Javascript and if possible learning more about CSS and DHTML page elements. These are the huge foundation to true web development. Learning to do everything by hand with no tool use saves a lot of time and will earn you tons of respect with employers.
Also if you are eager to learn programming you might want to take ASP and learn (dot).Net. These are things that most employers want from programmers as well as Java programming.
Personally I recommend learning PHP. You can do everything in PHP much simpler and quicker. PHP also has more security and capabilities than other languages. The two best languages are PHP and PERL for programming. I would start out with CSS, Javascript and DHTML though. Find where you want to go with your knowledge. I can say that CSS helps a ton to know. If you can learn everything about CSS and DHTML, there is almost nothing you can't do with a website. I have put that knowledge to use a lot.

You may have 1 year class tutor to understand the whole things happen in the internet. Question on how do you start building a website and many more questions follow.
TRY THIS: You may use them both.. Use CSS is a Style Sheet that is best for formatting your html text and JavaScript is best to manupulate your website without using other server tools because it runs on your internet browser.
DONT WORRY about the animations, you may use also GIF files (*.gif) or flash animation.
DONT WORRY about learning CSS and JavaScript and that Flash animation here is the best for you www.w3schools.com ...
Enjoy Learning!!!

if you want to move ahead along the lines of designing web pages, I suggest you take courses in software packages like Coldfusion, dreamweaver, Flash etc...If, however, you want to get into programming and stuff...then you might go with php, DHTML etc, and still advanced level stuff are CORBA, DOM, Java etc
