So...I go to college in a small city and have determined that bike riding may be a nifty and fun way to get to class as well as get my self into shape...I was wondering what kind of bicycle would be best. I want something nice but not really top of the line...Keep in mind the college student budget ;) Also, I know how to ride a bicycle but have never really used it as a mode to get to point A to B so my novice may need to be taken into consideration... And on that note are there any tips y'all have on bicycling in general...Sorry my question is so strangely worded I just sort of typed as it came to me.
Thanks in Advance for your help!!!

Bicycle theft is a big problem, especially in college/university cities.
So keep this in mind when getting a bike.
One that is usable, but doesn't look new, has all you need, but not more than you need, is advisable. I have known people who bought old junkie models for college for that reason.
And of course it goes without saying to ALWAYS lock your bike, using a u-bar-type lock.

I would recommend going to a bike shop run by people who know their stuff, and tell them your needs and your budget. They will help you find the perfect bike, perfect fit (very important), and teach you how to minimize the chances of theft.

Good luck, and enjoy!

18 speed mountain bike.

the thicker tires are a smoother ride. Plus the riding position is safer for urban areas. Plus the thicker wheels stand up better to potholes and curbs. And you can carry a heavier load like books on a rear bike rack. Racing bikes are the worst. Too fragile and you need to mess around with special shoes on the higher end bikes. Get a toe clip though...good safety equip since you might slip your footing without toe clips.

Partial to Specialized, Fisher, and Trek mountain bikes.

For college campuses, get a kryptonite lock with a new key (NEVER with a circular barrel lock--those can be picked in 10 seconds with a bic pen---NOT kidding)

Check the local retail stores like Pamida, K-mart, or Walmart if your town has those. Most of them you can get a bike on layaway for 10% down payment and pay on it for two months. Your best is Walmart. Try for a ten or eighteen speed mountain bike with good tires. Good luck.
