Unless you are approaching menopause, you *cannot* get pregnant on the first 5 days of your period--*if* it is a period. (The only way to be *absolutely* certain is if you were charting and know you ovulated about 2 weeks earlier.)
You also cannot get pregnant except at ovulation. A woman ovulates about 2 weeks (typically 12-16 days) before her *next* period. However, sperm can live in the female body for up to 3-5 days if conditions are right (and only a few hours otherwise).
So...if you have short cycles and had sex on day 6-7, you could get pregnant. For instance, if your cycles are 24 days long, you may ovulate on day 9; sex on day 6 or 7 may be during the time you are fertile.
If, however, you have long cycles, *and* this particular cycle would have been long, you cannot get pregnant from sex during your period. So...if your cycles are 34 days long, you would ovulate on day 18 at the earliest...etc.
For more details, please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler.
By the way, withdrawal is a lot more effective as a birth control method than most people think (see sources section below). If done correctly, only about 4 out of 100 sexually active women a year will get pregnant. The reason withdrawal is not recommended is that--unlike other birth control methods--you only know *after* using it if you used it correctly.

There is a chance, but it's slim. Usually ovulation is about 10-14 days before your next period starts. Sperm can live for 48-72 hours and still fertilize an egg. Usually, sex on your period is too early for the sperm to survive until ovulation, but not always! By the way, the pulling-out method is NOT a reliable birth-control method. If you don't want to get pregnant, you should look into other options.

Some people do some don't it all depends on when you ovulate. Some ovulate before their periods starts some do it after AND some ovulate during their menstrual. So the question is.....when did you ovulate?
