The best way to understand the reformation is to read a biography of King Henry the Eight of England, though most popular histories focus on his wives, still you get a good idea of why people got truly pissed off at the Catholic Church during the 1500s - - essentially unbridled corruption, greed among the hierarchy of the church. Cardinal Wolsey, for example earned the equivalent of millions of dollars by holding several offices entitling him to revenue from various churches, so much that he was able to pour a fortune into building Hampton Court one of the most magnificent palaces of all time. Another factor was the human spirit that rejected a Church that refused to publish the Bible in the language of the people, in fact the Church forbid the Word of God in any language but that of the priests, denouncing those that wanted to read the Bible, often burning them at the stake. Several Men of God rejected this notion along with the idea that there ought to be several layers of priests between man & God, they argued that men & women should be able to intercede with God through simple prayer, without the increasingly elaborate ceremonies that the Catholic Church insisted upon in their mad quest for more jewels & gold & costly vestements & other such fripparies. Oh, and pick up a biography of Martin Luther, he is the German priest who nailed a written challenge to The Pope on the door of his Wurtenberg Church thus propelling the reformation forward.
