In the film it was a sled Kane had as a child and like so many other things hung on to until the day he died, never playing with it.

It was a metaphor for Randolf Hearst's girlfriend. Heast refered to his girlfriends vagina as her "Rosebud". He picked her up and tried to turn her into an actress but with no sucess. She wound up spending most of her time playing with puzzles in Hearst's mansion. Kane is Hearst. The girl in the movie also represents Hearst's girlfriend. But the sled was a slap in hearst's face from Orson Welles who thought Hearst had discarded his girlfriend like so many of his possessions and need ed to be reminded of what was important in life.

Needless to say hearst did everything he could to stop this film from coming out, but; he ran out of money and the rest is history.

The movie has several layers to it and this is why its such a great movie. All these meanings are possible, and yet more interpretations can be made. But none of these meanings and interpretations can be said to be the conclusive answer to this question.

At the immediate level rosebud is Kane's childhood sled that he left behind but never forgot. It represented to him a simpler time in his life, which he dearly missed.

Rosebud could also represent love which he never found.

At another level rosebud represents that which is personal. Rosebud was his dying word and very personal to him. This word does not convey to the outsider/the viewer (no trespassing!) any real meaning. The importance of rosebud will only be known to him and therefore remain a mystery to everyone else.

And finally, rosebud also represent our futile attempt to summarize a life or a person through words. Although the reporter thinks this one clue can help unfold the life of Charles Kane, he must end his investigation without any real conclusion. And in that sense the movie is also asking whether words can really sum up an individuals existence.

literally, it was his childhood sled, painted with a rose. Figuratively, it was his his happiness. Which was taken away the moment a lot of money came into his life.
