Depends on the situation. I would imagine that any fear stimuli that is real in an individuals mind would make them run.
1) Death of them self
2) Death of a loved one.
3) Harm to themselves or loved one.
The specific physical being/method may differ, the idea or threat still remains, the fear stimuli is present.

1. The fear of a mountain lion eating you, chasing you ( it will probably catch you anyway)
2. A smile - for a runner this is stimulating
3. A shotgun blast in the air in your direction for taking apples off someones trees.
4. A mad father, after you crawl out his daughters window

Fear, excitement, and determination.
Essentially the first two would help in the production of adrenaline and would increase speed. However at a cost to the body. Determination however stems from body control and effort and I think the best way to do so. Practice.
