First, to Mr. Wizard- Mumbai is in India, not Africa.

Now, on to the actual question. I don't think that Mumbai is any ruder a city than most. The majority of people there are nice, and helpful. In most cases Mumbai is a very welcoming and courteous city, as a whole. What gives it a bad name are the few people who have no consideration for others. Also, the people that decide which city is the rudest are foreigners to Mumbai. And when foreigners with little knowedge about Mumbai specifically or even India in general, try to force their way into people's lives, the people there become defensive and rude.

Mumbai, Africa: a rude city? Well, I don't know. However, I did see a video taken at a stop sign in Zimbawe--where the driver merely ran past the sign.

The driver was quickly swarmed by local police--all armed with ready M-14 rifles and Uzis: not your average moving violation stop--which that's exactly what it was.

If that's an indication of EVERY African city, then I'd say one be cautious visitng Mumbai.....and pay attention to their traffic laws.

People land up in Bombay to make money. They come with dreams and ambition. However like it happens in life nothing comes easy. So people in Bombay feel a little frustrated and then start to chase their dreams with out bothering about how they are perceived by the rest of the world. In the bargain they also become rude and yes if an opinion survey is conducted on any normal day Bombay will come out tops on a rudeness index but wait for a time like last night when a few bomb blasts reminded Bombayits of how uncertain life is. Last night most of Bombay was on its best behavior. Though law and order could have easily gone out of control like in happened after the London blast there was not even an incident of eve teasing reported from Bombay. No riots, no loot, no vandalizing n absolutely no mayhem. In fact if you check today, in less then 24 hours, Bombay is back to normal and rude again….

Thanks for putting up such a question, I loved answering it.

No Mumbai is not at all a rude city but yes the people are not so helpful in my opinion.I don't know what the others think. Some people are selfish too and some people who have a high status are very proud of what they are and they do not care of other people's sentiments. But yes other people are very nice. That's what I think.

If saying Thank you and please makes you polite then perhaps the west is ahead.. But Mumbai tolerates strangers and even embraces them as if it their own. When life is down, there is someone to pick you up. There is someone who will always offer you a corner if you are stranded, and that is the real measure of humanity!
