Punk bands would be just as bad as rap or w.e. That stuff is all about sex and drugs, while emo music has some VERY meaningful lyrics. Once you're around that type of mood, it kind of grows on you and influences the your perspective on things. Some people just take it WAY to far with suicide.

Parents usually never try and understand what the message of any bands their kids listen to have. If it's "emo" they tend to not like the makeup or clothes they wear, if it's "punk", then they criticize the way they look, and automatically assume they are rebels, outcasts,or anarchists. None of that is true though. Parents should just let their kids enjoy whatever type of music they want, or else the kids will end up sneaking it anyway. But at the same time, they shouldn't let things get out of control.

i call this belief racism. they are racist about there beliefs. they think since they don't act like them or sI'milar, they are a bad influence. but really if they just take the time to find out who they are they will find out there is nothing different about them. they got skin, a heart, blood, lungs and many other organs that everybody has, the only thing different is their style. and no im not emo. i really like rap mostly. but i listen to all music. my band of time is coldplay. i listen to country too. my rappers are Dem Franchize boyz and Nelly. so people think they are a bad influence because they don't have a diverse personality, somewhat like mine. personally rap music is bad. like the lyrics. thats why i listen to everything. rock the lyrics are clean and good. if i could get the beat from rap and the lyrics from rock, i would be just fine. i would call it something like "rack". i listen to country, because the lyrics are so sweet and face it people with the country accent can sing.

I have a teenage daughter who is "emo" and I teach Jr. high. I listen to all kinds of the "today" music and I think the punk music actually has some positive messages, while the rap music is absolutely shocking to me at times....I know, I know, when I was young in the 60's, the "oldsters" thought rock was the devil's music, but have you actually LISTENED to some the rap music today, at least in the 60's we weren't advocating rape, violence against women, killing, OMG

Crazy talk, I tell you!

I think that people don't like when their kids hear 'negative' things. I would say that a lot of punk is (or at least WAS) negative. Not in a bad way, but rather in a way that says "Wake up! Don't take stuff at face value! Think for yourself!"

At least, that is why I listen to p-rock.

Probably because it's that ever-popular lyrics debate. It has been proven that lyrics and words heard influence actions, allbeit in a small degree, yadda yadda.

Probably because the lyrics are somewhat depressing and sometimes talk about suicide. Kids who are depressed already hear that and get ideas (is the general point-of-view).

For the same reason parents in the 50's thought that rock was a bad influence and the same reason their parents though swing was bad and their parents thought that jazz was bad. Becuase its music that appeals to one generation and its a different sound to what parent's listened to when they grew up
