You're not going to get many reasonable answers to such a question, especially in a nation that's gun-obsessed. Frankly, I don't believe it would necessarily REDUCE crime, but it would possibly reduce violent crime and firearm related deaths...there's PLENTY of anecdotal evidence that supports such a conclusion. There are several other nations with stricter gun laws. They still have crime, but much lower murder rates.

The landmark study which most comprehensively answered this question is John R. Lott, Jr.'s "More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control Laws" (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1998 (ISBN: 0226493636)

The answer is that crime and criminals' willingness to engage in crime goes down as the prevalence of lawful gun ownership and carrying goes up. To the extent gun control wrongfully prescribes blanket "solutions" which hamper or take away lawful gun ownership and carry--instead of rightfully focusing tightly on better enforcement of *existing* sensible law--it actually promotes greater rates of crime than what could otherwise be achieved in reducing crime.

No, gun control laws have quite often increased overall crime rates in proportion to the severity of the new restrictions. Law abiding people often suffer the most when this happens.

Nope. Only the law- abiding people obey the gun control restrictions. The people that will break laws to live will have (get) guns illegally and will feel safe in the knowledge that the people that they want to victimize ( the law- abiding people) will be unarmed and unable to defend themselves. Since the people that break laws will feel safe in breaking laws, crime will actually go up as gun control laws get more restrictive.
