The best team didn't win the FIFA World CUP 2006 for sure. Italy
won it without facing Brazil, Argentina and England, some of the contenders. Do you think it's better to find out the champion among the last eight teams by league system rather than knockout system? I'm disappointed to see the champion is decided through penalty shoot-out.

Yes, yes!!!! The knock-out system is terrible because of precisely what you said (though I wouldn't write England down as a contender). I think a league system, and a fair one grouped by assessing the team's current standings in the world, would be a great idea. It would also mean more games for the fans to watch so why not??

I was disappointed too but Italy surprised me.

I don't think that's the answer. Penalty shoot-outs are not the problem. First of all, if people don't like them, then the team should not play shuffle-ball until the OT runs out so they can get to the penalties. I don't hear the players complaining that they don't like penalty shoot-outs, btw. Overall, the best way to get to the overall champion is to play games. Anyway, Europe will always have the upper hand in the World Cup for obvious reasons.
Although, how about if they do a re-draw at the end of the Round of 16. They would RANDOMLY choose teams that will play each other in the quarters. That's one way to mix it up. And it would add some more unpredictability to the tournament.

Well that is a tough question but with so much other competition going on European Club Championships, local cups, league championships there is simply not that much time to accomplish something.

Now in regards to your comments: Brazil and Argentina were definetely talked about contenders. England was never a contender. Only the British fans see themselves as contenders every year and nobody else does.

However Chech Republic was a contender before the cup that Italy played. Germany beat Argentina and Italy beat them. If you look at in that regard the only contender France beat was Brazil. In fact the three previos matches were played against the weakest teams in the tournament where France barely survived./ When Italy was 1st in the group of death. It is over, Italy is the champion.

FORZA ITALIA>

I do think that the best team won FIFA. Italy may not be as quick as Argentina or have the ball handling skills as Brazil, but they have the pedigree. They have experience and a pretty good mixture of everything from great defense (with Nesta) to wicked midfield, and all the way to a not-so-shabby forward. It's all about experience and knowledge of the game. The the girl ahead of me is right...if people don't like shoot-outs then blame it on the teams for not making just one more goal.

I kind of agree on the dissapointment you have regarding the penalty shoo-out situation but, Italy got to the finals on their own. The one thing that distinguishes them from many is their ability to make the most out of every goal attempt they have. I didnt see them stumble for a second during the shoot out unlike England.I think the knock out system is fine the way it is, teams have to earn their place... this is the world cup we are talking about. Everyone should be out to get their own.

yes.. it is indeed very disappointing that the finals were decided by a penalty shootout, the great PELE even called a penalty is a cowardly way to score a goal. as far as the system i think it should just remain that way... italy pobably would have made it to the finals even if they had fought against the countries you mentioned, but then again.. we'll never know....

knock out system is the way it's been for a while...and should be that way. Winners are determined by how well they play on a consistent basis. Germany should have won the whole thing if they didn't break down during the italy game. That's the way it goes

nobody likes penalty kicks. That's why every team has to play hard to avoid going there, beacuse it's just pure luck!

italy conceded only 2 goals in open play in 7 matches, what more do you expect from them? they beat germany (who beat argentina), they also beat france(who beat both spain and portugal). give credit to whom its due. italy deserved it. dont let ur emotions cloud ur judgement.
