France has issues; there is no doubt about that. First they have a real problem in that nearly 30% of their country is Muslim with Islamic beliefs. They can't be percieved as anti Islamic to this enormous group within its borders (see what open borders gets you)?

Second they were only close to Saddam for the pay offs he gave through the oil for food program. France was a leading seller of technology (and weapons) to Saddam so he was a good ally - and could pay (with oil).

Push comes to shove I think the French would back us up in a bad situation right now; but in the future when the Islamic culture takes over - no way.

The same reason that the Bushes were close to the guy they are fighting now, Asma Ben Laten . Or at least say they are fighting. America was close To Saddam Hussein to the point they gave him weapons and backed him on several occasions. just Noreaga was pappa Bushes best friend. At all boils down to drugs, money and oil. Yes you can trust France as much as you can trust the United States.

Were they any closer to Saddam than our own George Bush Sr.?

He supplied Saddam with weapons and training for his men while he was Director of the CIA and helped Saddam overthrow their government.

Something to think about.

As far as the France go, I admire their guts to not always take the most popular stand.

The french government is about as trustworthy as a den of thieves. They sold out to Saddam and also to Iran. Since they lack anything but a dying wine industry to support their socialist government they must take bribes from whoever they can find to donate. It is sad that a once trusted country has become so corrupt..

The USA and Donald Rumsfeld were REAL close too Saddam, especially during the Iran/Iraq war. He was our buddy and we sold him weapons.
Seems we are kind of two faced and, like your conservative government, can't be trusted.
When your brain grows, you'll figure it out. 'Till then...

it was in their best interest, just like it was in the united states best interest when THEY supported saddam in the 80's when he invaded iran, because they saw islamic revoltuion in iran as the bigger threat so they gave saddam much of the weapons he later used including chemical weapons which he used against the iranians and later on the kurds

no they should not be trusted - they were close to sadam because they made a back door deal(outside of UN sanctions) to handle the sale of his oil and get the cash back to him when Iraqui oil was only legal to be sold for medicine and food for the Iraqui people
