By modern definition, there has never been, nor will there ever be, an armed conflict with no war crimes.

So the answer is no. The only thing that has changed between ancient wars and modern wars is that "war crimes" has been codified into international law, i.e. the Geneva Coventions, and their violation is enforced by an international body.

Five hundred years ago if your entire village was murdered and raped by another country, you were just **** out of luck.

many and at many times. the concept of a war crime is recent, it dates only from the Nurenburgh Trials of Germany, most of history before that regards war as war, and what we call war crimes were just part of war. The concept of an innocent civilian is a recent concept also, War is against Nations, not individuals, and the farmer feeding the soldier or the smith arming him are as much the enemy as the soldier. Rape, pillage and especially looting were considered normal, especially looting because it was the only pay some armies received and the terms and legalities are still considered regarding spoils of war.

I doubt it, but the term didn't exist until the last century. Before that, there were acts that were considered beyond the pale, and before that, all was fair in love and war.
