Generally the Jamaican people are wonderful but one side of the island is for tourists and the other is basically poor Jamaicans.
Carnival is fabulous as well as the pubs but women should be aware at nighttime and try not to be alone.
Many times Jamaican men may misread the smiling face of a girl at a party and take it as a proposal which can be difficult to talk your way out of.
Pot is not "legal" but they do look the other way, don't try and bring much back and REMEMBER the pipes (bowls) they sell at market really are for decoration only. They are covered in a thick shellac that will bubble up under a flame and never go away.

I have to disagree with what k_richey said about he Eastern side of the island are where the poor people are and to avoid it! Yes, there are poor communities there, but its like that all over Jamaica.

If you get the chance to travel; around, here are some really nice spots to visit:

1. Port Antonio, Portland (renouned for having the best jerk pork on the island)
2. Yalis, St. Thomas (renouned for having the best jerk chicken on the island... yummy)
3. Blue Mountain, Portland
4. Soverign Mall, Kingston (great eatery in the food hall)
5. Lyme Keye, Portmore (beautiful beach off the coast)
6. Blue Lagoon, Portland

These are just a few places of interest to prove that the east coast are all how it is portrayed.

One tip that i always live by... ALWAYS ASK "HOW MUCH?"!! You can get conned if you dont!

Have a great trip! =o)

Go to Reggae Sun splash or Reggae Sumfest.
Let good sense prevail, nothing bad/dangerous is likely to happen but tourists are generally viewed as being wealthy so be wary of the overtly friendly they may just be trying to hustle a quick buck.
Try the appleton tour and shades night club in Ocho Rios.

Here's some tips....

1.When you get to Jamaica be sure to get some Jamaican money at the airport.

2. Don't buy pot. You will have people offering to sell it to you before you even reach your hotel room.

3. Hire a cab to go anywhere. Don't drive. The roads are narrow and Jamaicans drive way more aggresively and faster than most people are used to.

4. Don't carry more than fifty bucks in cash around with you. More than that simply isn't needed.

5. Foreigners are targets for Jamaican "players". They will try to steal your heart and then get your financial "support" with stories about how hard things are there. Don't get involved romantically with anyone there. It almost never, ever works out.

6. Dress casual. All the time, where ever you go.

7. As you walk or visit around to places you will be constantly approached to buy this or that little thing. Be firm, say, no thank you. If they persist, and they will, simply say, again, you are not interested. For the most part, as rude as it sounds, you should simply ignore people that call you over to talk with them. And many will do so. Every one that does this wants one thing. Your money. Either by trying to get you to buy something or by asking you to just outright give it to them.

8. Hire a tender. Easy to do. For 25 to 40 dollars a day you can hire a man to work for you as guide and general assistant. If in doubt who to hire, simply ask any cabby and he'll find someone for you. He will go where you go, and save you alot of hassles by directing you away from places you shouldn't go, and by keeping the street hawkers and beggars from hounding you too much.

9. Haggle for anything you buy. They will ask you for 100 bucks for something worth 5, and not blink an eye when they do. In haggling, be honest with yourself. Pay only what it is actually worth to you to obtain. Not what is asked, or what you "think" you can get it for. But pay what it is worth to you.

10. Use common sense. Stay off the streets late at night. Lock your room when you leave it and do not leave money or valubles in your room. Do not trust the maids, but treat them decently. And tip them daily. Tipping maids prior to their work ensures they do a very good job and respect your property.

11. Tip everyone. Usually two to five dollars is an excellent tip. Carry 20 bucks worth of singles, and remember Jamaicans prefer to be tipped in Jamaican money.

12. Be careful where and what you eat. They do not have the same sanitation laws in their country as we do governing food service industry standards. Bring some Pepto just in case. But you can find it there if you need to.

Lastly, other than these cautionary tips, just enjoy. The people are friendly and fun to be around. It's a different pace of life there and the first thing you will need to do is adjust to that. Just slow down, enjoy, and have fun!

We are going to the Ocho Rios area next week and have been researching various stuff there. I have found the website TripAdvisor.com to be an excellent source of info! You can post questions and read other people's posts and the answers they received. Simply type in your resort name in the search area and check "forums." Have fun and perhaps we will bump into you in the airport next week.

Ilike what Questor had to say for the most part, if your into the tours try the bamboo river trip, or the horseride in the sea, just remember this is not the U.S and these people are very poor for the most part. you should not be scared but always be alert. and have the time of your life, its one of the best islands i have been to. if you can just relax and in joy you will be fine. just use street smarts
