Two days, allowing for occasional stops. The sky is the limit if you want to see everything along the way. You could seriously spend a week or two.

There are few reasonably-priced areas or accomodations. However, I would try the college town of San Luis Obispo, about halfway. I stayed at one of their more upscale and quirky motels, the Apple Farm Inn, and had a nice time for just over $100 a night. Other places were much cheapter.

I would caution against heavy driving. The road is slow and twisty for a major highway, and you can get fatigued to the point where it is not fun at all. You might consider a 3-day trip, in which case I would stop the first night SLO, the second in Santa Cruz or Santa Barbara, and possibly the third night in Half Moon Bay or even something farther north, just before the rockslide. You should get some deals there because of the closure of the highway north of town which cut off most of their tourist business from San Francisco. If you're looking at a map you would have to take hwy 92 from Half Moon Bay over to Highway 280. As an alternate windy road you can catch Skyline Boulevard somewhere near San Francisco and drive it all the way north. Beautiful mountain redwood country with views of the ocean.

I drove a small portion of the PCH a couple years ago from the Hearst Castle to Monterey and that took me about 5 hours. I'm guessing driving from LA to SF would take at least 24 hours straight because the road is windy, two laned, and 35mph speed limit. The views are incredible.

About 10-12 hours. If you want something cheap, you're going to have to keep to a tight schedule. I'd just drive and stop where convenient. Expect to pay big since California is expensive. Be sure to check out Carmel and Big Sur possibly Esalen.

It'll take two days, if you plan to enjoy the drive. Caution though, Highway 1 (PCH) is closed just South of Pacifica by Devil's Slide is closed, check if there are other road closings before leaving.
