I think that sets a bad example for future generations, that you could do something that violent, taking away the beauty of the game, but still get awarded for that. Remember this game is watch by Billions of people.
He is an amazing soccer player, but what he did is not acceptable, and now FIFA awarded him? because he is retiring, that is not an excuse, It is really dissapointing to see this kind of thing happening.
I love Soccer, and do not let future generations follow this steps.

De Rossi of Italy made someone bleed..Does he deserve the world cup?? He hurt someone for absolutely no reason. Yes Zidane gave a head in the chest of Materazzi which is not a good example for youg children but that ****** of MAterazzi told him something really bad and he held him to insult him. Is that a good action? NO..Zidane still deserves the golden ball because he was the best player in that World Cup...You cannot give to someone else because no one was better1 HE'S DA BOMB and he's still the best soccer player in the world of our generation and even of all times!!

I believe the award went to the proper person here. I say this because, based upon various reports from professional lip readers who have studied the tapes of the head butt, it appears he said something about him being a "dirty butt-******* muslim", and various comments about his "mother and sister being a whore". Plus there was a debated comment about him being a "dirty muslim terrorist". The terrorist comment has been supported by a few lip readers but denied by a few others.

Personally, if he said that crap to me and there were any racist remarks like that, I would have likely hit him too. I'd put up with the "your mama's a whore comment" but the religous comment and the terrorist thing, went too far.

Just a side note though, Zidane's mother had been hospitalized only hours before the game so this likely played a part in his reaction.

Now, I am German so I could care less who won, but there is more to this story than is being told... Zidane's actions were wrong but the itlalian guy should have kept his mouth shut too. If the muslim comment and/or the terrorist comment are true, then the Italian guy deserved exactly what he got. And if it was me, I would have likely kicked him in the nuts afterwards. However if these things weren't actually said, which I doubt, then Zidane is a disgrace and should have not received the award as he did.

That being said, there's no room anywhere for racist and ignorant comments like that and if they were made, actions should be taken against the italian player, and Zidane's excellent play should be celebrated.

I agree with "Manuel G" comments, but the Golden Ball (btw: the Golden Boot was awarded to Klose) should be awarded to the best player in the tournament and Zidane was not the best during this World Cup. He had a great game with Brasil (and in part with Portugal) but then he was on average in the other games. Few other players performed a lot better during the tournament. Unfortunately the journalists that voted for the award have decided so... therefore there is nothing to be done.
My opinion: Zidane = great player, little man.

I don't think he should of got it. Man Ronaldo scored the World Cup Record for most goals....15...That's friggen' amazing...He should of got it...Not Zidane. And can you imagine, the next group of young people following Zidane's example ?? What shame...FIFA has to do something about that !

It proves one thing.. they do not agree with his behaviour, but they might think, if they are in his shoes, they might have reacted the same way. :) His good credits gave him many benefits of doubt

And of course, they realise human are not 100% and they can forgive him for the 1% error for the 99% things he did right.

That is true respect and trust! And great loyalty to follow a leader and accept his remorse when he makes error :)

This mistake of his won't change the fact that he was a great player. Everyone makes mistake and yes it was horrible and disappointing. I am sure he doesnt like to go around headbutting players. The italian player must have said something very offense that just pissed him off. He shouldnt have done it. but anyways i believe that he deserved it

Zizou made one mistake, everyone makes mistakes, are u a saint? NOOOO, U are not
So, he deserves even more than the golden ball. He is a true legens, he is in the same category as Pele and Maradona. He is truly the best
