There is no such thing as a stupid question. You ask because you're unsure or need to know. The person answering may provide a stupid answer because they don't know the source of the question. What's obvious to one, may be inobvious to another.

Do you mean a deliberately stupid question or one that may seem that way to another?
A deliberately stupid question is, by definition, not an attempt to find a serious answer.
A relatively stupid question is only answered by those that are of the opinion that it is beneath them to take it seriously.

based on the old saying. dumb questions deserve dumb answers. if the question is really stupid, its either a joke or the person is really dumb and bored. people answer more out of irriatation from a stupid question being asked and doesn't deserve a decent answer.

maybe the person who asked feel in that sense of doing themselves a favor..to have fun and be laugh off or to see things of the other side and forget to think twice to throw a silly question or maybe they are in an awkward situation and have to say so..!
