Go Start>run>msconfig and it will give you a list of programs on the last tab to choose to run at start up.

On most computers go to Start -> Programs -> Startup
From there you can delete individual programs. However, this doesn't show all programs running so you can also:

Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Startup
Here will allow you to uncheck programs that you don't want running. Again, this will only show you most of the programs, so you can also

Start -> Run -> Regedit -> Expand HKEY_Local_Machine -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Run
Deleting entries here will allow you to remove stuff not found under the Startup folder or under Msconfig

*****NOTE*****
If you are not comfortable deleting any key in the registry, it is advised that you don't. As the registry does contain machine critical system data, deleting the wrong key or value may cause your system to become unstable or to fail. It is recommended you do a registry backup (File -> Export ... w/ My computer highlighted) before making any changes to the registry.

Click start select run type MSCONFIG on a tab on the far right, says startup, click it and there is a list of all the programs that start up when you boot. (uncheck the ones you know what they are and dont want to load, it just makes those programs faster to load when you try to use them). Uncheck them, and reboot. you will get a popup that says something about the sysconfig has been altered, Select the little check box that says dont show this message again and select ok.

Go to the start menu, run and type in MSCONFIG in the box.
Select the startup tab. find programs like MSOffice and adobe that are running at startup...hint don't disable anything unless you are sure of what that program does or is associated with.

or, Star, Run, type MSCONFIG, and uncheck the ones under Start-up that you don't need - be careful they might be important
