I have started the gym, but the trainer is a jerk, and won't help me much. I start out walking on the machines for about 20 minutes. I was just wondering how many laps make up a mile?

The trainer is a jerk? Tell the mgmt, he's there to serve you too and you're PAYING for him too!.

They're all calibrated the same. One lap = 440 yards. 4 laps is one mile.

Well the usual lap is 600 feet I think, in Australia the usual lap is 400 metres so that would be 4 laps to a mile or close to it.

Maybe if you found out who makes the machine and you asked them?

I think a lap on the typical track is 1/4 mile... so four laps is a mile.
