you could always use a foam or jelly. there's also a film that's easy to use. just make sure to read the packaging to make sure they're compatible with condoms. or she could always go on the pill.
it's different for everyone, but women usually ovulate around day 14 of their cycle (day 1 would be the first day of her period) and there's 2 or 3 days where the possibility of getting pregnant is very high. the days before and the days after are usually infertile, but use a condom anyway. and if someone tells you she can't get pregnant while she's on her period, just know that isn't always true. it is possible, especially if her periods are irregular.
unless she's tracking her cycle, she probably won't know if she's ovulating or not.

Not all girls know when they will ovulate, so I would not rely on that as a barrier method. Why don't you have her get on the pill (she can go to your local health department if she doesn't want to go to the doc's) before you opt to do anything? If that is not an option, which I'm not sure why it wouldn't be, unless she was too young & didn't want to tell her parents (in that case you probably should not be having sex anyway) you can use another barrier method such as spermicidal foam. It's a foam that the girl sprays in her vagina before intercourse so if the condom leaks or breaks there's that extra protection. Go to this web site for more information http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/portal/medicalinfo/birthcontrol/
another one is listed below. I am very glad that you are at least trying to be responsible :)

If she uses a form of birth control herself plus you a condom then nothing to worry about. The less worries you have the better sex will be. Does not have to be the pill check around the condom area at the pharmacy for femal contraceptives.

Although there is nothing that is 100% effective you can also use a contraceptive foam with the condom. Some women experience some pain during ovulation, which usually occurs about two weeks after their period.

Don't have sex if you don't want to risk pregnancy--especially if you're teenagers.
